Know the Difference:
Direct Thermal vs. Thermal Transfer

Thermal labels are specialty labels designed for use in thermal printers, which utilize heat instead of ink to print images & text. There are two different methods thermal printers can use to accomplish this: direct thermal printing and thermal transfer printing.
DIRECT THERMAL

This method uses heat-sensitive material that blackens when the thermal printhead applies heat directly to the material. This is how your retail receipts are typically printed.

  • Ideal for short-term use

  • No ink, ribbon, or toner needed

  • Black only print

  • Sensitive to heat and sunlight exposure

  • Can only print on heat-sensitive labels

Common Applications
  • Shipping Labels

  • Receipts

  • Event Tickets

  • Prescription Labels

  • Barcode Labels

THERMAL TRANSFER

In this method, the thermal printhead applies heat to an ink ribbon that melts and embeds the ink into the label.

  • Ideal for long-term use

  • Requires thermal transfer ribbon

  • Allows color printing

  • Fading & smearing resistant

  • Can print on a variety of label materials

Common Applications
  • Cold, Wet, and Outdoor Storage Labels

  • Compliance Labels

  • Asset Tags

  • Permanent IDs

  • Wristbands
